Task #11- Service Learning
Students
will provide for the community, more specifically foster children, by
participating in a Direct Service Learning Project. Students will be escorted
by teachers and parents to an orphanage where they volunteer their time playing
games, reading stories, and teaching sports to younger children. Student will
thereby gain special insight into the essential dynamics of family by providing
fun support in an “older sibling” role. Students will begin the project by
preparing for the eventual visit with a visit for a director from the orphanage
who can inform them of the realities of the foster children’s family situation
(or lack thereof). After the action of
visiting the orphanage, students will reflect on their experience with a
personal reflection, followed by a class discussion. Lastly, students will
demonstrate what this project has taught them about family by presenting (in
groups of 5) their experiences to other classes during tutorial period.
